## Key points

- Michigan’s open Senate seat is a key contest in the fight for control of Congress.
- Democrat Abdul El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost in 2024.
- A divisive Democratic primary and a late endorsement of Rogers have added uncertainty.

## Summary

Michigan voters are choosing a US senator on 3 November in a closely watched race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers. The seat is open because Democratic senator Gary Peters is retiring. El-Sayed, a former county health director, is campaigning on a progressive platform centred on universal healthcare. Rogers, a former congressman, narrowly lost Michigan’s Senate race in 2024. The contest matters nationally because Republicans hope to gain the seat, while Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate.

The campaign has tested both candidates’ ability to reach beyond their core supporters. El-Sayed won a divisive Democratic primary, and his former rival Haley Stevens has since endorsed Rogers. Disputes over Israel and concerns about living costs have also shaped the race. Rogers must attract voters without Donald Trump at the top of the ballot, despite Trump having carried Michigan in 2024. Voting is under way, and the outcome remains undecided.
