## Key points

- US personnel may be stationed near Damascus.
- The mission could support a Syria-Israel security deal.
- Syrian officials have disputed the report.

## Summary

The US military is preparing for a possible presence at an airbase near Damascus to help monitor a potential security agreement between Syria and Israel, Reuters reported, citing six people familiar with the plans. The proposal comes as President Donald Trump presses the two countries towards an arrangement that could include a demilitarised zone in southern Syria, but Syrian officials have disputed the report.

Preparations reportedly included reconnaissance missions over the past two months and US C-130 transport aircraft landing to assess the runway, which officials said appeared ready for use. The proposed tasks include logistics, surveillance, refuelling aircraft and humanitarian operations; the article does not specify how many US personnel might be deployed. Trump has met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa several times since 2025, while Syria’s role as a route for Iraqi oil has also grown during the Iran war.
