US Open offers biggest prize fund in Grand Slam history

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

The US Open has announced a record $108 million (£79.2 million) prize pool for the 2026 tournament, a 20% rise on last year and the largest fund in Grand Slam history. The increase comes after players, including some who curtailed media appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon in protest, pushed for higher pay and better welfare provisions, and it accompanies the launch of a new Grand Slam Player Council giving players formal input into decisions at all four majors.

Singles champions will earn $5.5 million each, a 10% increase, while first-round losers receive $140,000, up 27% on 2025 and the largest percentage rise of any round. The fund includes a $2 million welfare contribution and ring-fenced player support payments, addressing player demands that Slams commit a set share of revenue to prize money. The US Tennis Association has yet to publish its 2025 financial statement, so it remains unclear whether the tournament has met players' target of allocating 16% of revenue to prize money. The US Open begins on Sunday, 30 August.
