Utah firefighter and four family members killed in flash flooding

BBC World · 16 hours ago

Five members of a Utah family, including a Provo fire captain, died in a flash flood while on a day trip to a campground near Bicknell in southern Utah over the weekend. Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina and their three sons were killed after heavy rain triggered the flooding; their daughter, who did not go on the outing, is the only immediate family member to survive. The deaths have been described by Provo Fire & Rescue as devastating for the fire service community, and a fundraiser has been set up to support the surviving daughter.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said officials were called to the campground at around 17:00 local time on Friday, where a young male victim was found dead. A further search uncovered two more male bodies, and by Saturday the remaining two family members were also confirmed dead. The sheriff's office did not name the victims, but identification came via statements from Provo Fire & Rescue and a GoFundMe page linked to the family.
