## Key points

- Utah police issued two citations after a campus altercation.
- The university says the investigation is ongoing.
- The student disputes the account and alleges provocation.

## Summary

A University of Utah student was issued citations for simple assault and property damage after a confrontation with a College Republican at a campus table about gender. The incident matters because it involved an alleged physical attack and remarks endorsing violence, while also raising disputes about free speech and what happened before the fight.

The university says the student wiped a whiteboard, argued with a student tabling, then knocked them to the ground and tore their shirt. Police issued two Class B misdemeanour citations; the investigation is ongoing, and the university has offered support to both students. The student, identified as Grace, says the confrontation was a set-up, alleges the Republicans followed and provoked her, and says she was punched; the video does not establish how much time passed between the recorded remarks and the fight.
