Valve has revealed pricing for its Steam Frame VR headset, with a $1,059 starting price for the 256GB model that is likely to prove divisive, echoing the reaction to its Steam Machine console. The higher-end 1TB version costs $1,299, with both prices including controllers and a rebuilt, headset-native version of Half-Life: Alyx, though Valve has confirmed the game won't be ready in time for launch and will instead follow "soon" via a redeemable voucher.

Buyers can also purchase optional extras, including a $29 charger, a $49 Accessory Replacement Kit and a $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit, with prescription lenses and an RGB camera planned but not yet priced. Orders will be handled through a reservation system: sign-ups close on 17 September at 10am PT, after which Valve will randomly allocate buyers to a reservation list or waitlist, with the first purchase emails going out from 18 September. Valve also detailed software improvements since review units shipped, including 130 verified standalone titles, a new Gamepad mode and upgrades to streaming, tracking and visual sharpness, while noting that adapting Half-Life: Alyx took over a year of extra engineering work.
