## Key points

- Vance’s midterm rallies offer a preview of a possible 2028 campaign.
- He says he has made no decision about running for president.
- The election result could affect his standing within the Republican Party.

## Summary

US Vice-President JD Vance has spent the closing weeks of the 2026 midterm campaign travelling to Republican rallies, giving voters a clearer view of how he might campaign for president in 2028. At a Texas event, he attacked Democrats and drew on his upbringing to argue that others should have the opportunities he had. His appearances have been smaller than President Donald Trump’s rallies, but Republican strategists say they give Vance practice on the national stage and help him build relationships with candidates across the country.

Vance says he is focused on the midterms and has not decided whether to seek the Republican presidential nomination. He has indicated that he and his wife will discuss the question after the election. Trump has praised Vance but has made no public endorsement for 2028. The election result may shape the party’s view of its future: a strong Republican showing could strengthen Vance’s position, while heavy losses could prompt closer scrutiny of his appeal and of the administration he serves.
