Variety, in partnership with Utopai Studios, is hosting an invite-only "Future in Focus" event at the Toronto International Film Festival on 12 September, bringing together filmmakers to discuss how technology and innovation are reshaping filmmaking. The event highlights growing industry interest in how tools such as AI and immersive storytelling are influencing creative production, with participants ranging from established directors to studio executives.

The programme features a conversation with actor James McAvoy about directing and producing "California Schemin'" and his role in "Faith", alongside an interview with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison, director of "Love of Your Life", moderated by Variety's Angelique Jackson. A separate panel, moderated by Variety executive editor Matt Donnelly, will bring together Stephanie Ahn, Carsten Kurpanek, Liz Garbus, Rebel Wilson and Basil Iwanyk to discuss innovation in filmmaking. Utopai Studios COO Kevin Chong said the partnership reflects a "new model for filmmaking" combining artistry, technology and new production methods.
