Edoardo Ciardiello Crescimanno, a 50-year-old Italian man known as the "Vatican sniper," has surrendered to police in Rome after allegedly shooting multiple women with an air rifle in the affluent Prati neighbourhood near the Vatican. The suspect admitted to targeting random women "just for fun" with no connection to his victims, claims that have caused significant alarm amongst local residents.

Police traced Crescimanno after discovering he had purchased an air rifle from a local shop earlier in the month; investigators pinpointed his apartment by analysing the trajectory of pellets that struck windows and shutters throughout the district. The most serious incident involved journalist Cristina Stillitano, who required surgery after being shot in the arm, whilst an accountant was also wounded in the calf. Crescimanno is believed responsible for approximately six separate attacks in recent days and now faces charges of causing aggravated bodily harm.
