Venice's 83rd Film Festival has unveiled a September programme that deliberately favours independent and auteur-driven cinema over commercial blockbusters. Artistic director Alberto Barbera's competition slate brings together established names such as Casey Affleck, making his feature directorial debut with "Company", South Korean director Lee Chang-Dong returning after an eight-year break, Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda, and writer-director Martin McDonagh. The festival will also screen Alex Gibney's four-hour documentary on billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, reflecting Venice's continued commitment to substantial, director-led work across both fiction and documentary formats.

Alongside its focus on established voices in competition, the festival's Horizons strand is spotlighting emerging and debut filmmakers from around the world. Michelle Zhou's first feature, "Big Little Things", has already secured international sales ahead of its premiere, signalling the section's growing role as a launchpad for new international talent. Together, the two strands underline Venice's positioning as a counterweight to mainstream studio releases, prioritising artistic ambition over box-office draw.
