Coventry City progressed to the Carabao Cup third round with a dramatic 4-2 win away at Plymouth Argyle, coming from a leveller to score twice late on despite fielding nine changes from the side beaten by Arsenal in the Premier League. Frank Lampard's team raced into a two-goal lead inside five minutes through Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni, but Plymouth, roused by their opportunity for a cup upset, fought back through Callum Irow and Xavier Amaechi to level the tie. Coventry ultimately proved too strong, with substitute Ephron Mason-Clark restoring their lead before Victor Torp converted a late penalty to seal victory.

The match, played in front of around 2,100 travelling Coventry fans who made an eight-hour round trip, saw goalkeeper Dan Bentley make his club debut and centre-back Liam Kitching captain the side. Plymouth's head coach Tom Cleverley, a former England teammate of Lampard's, had described the tie as "a little bit of a free hit" for his side, who created several chances including a goal-line block from Bentley to deny Ryan Hardie's follow-up effort. Mason-Clark's goal, his first appearance of the season after a hamstring injury, was set up by a Tatsuhiro Sakamoto cross and squared by Torp before the latter's decisive penalty confirmed Coventry's progress.
