Rapper Vince Staples performed a Tiny Desk concert for NPR ahead of his autumn tour, playing five tracks from his new rock-influenced album that explores the ongoing disenfranchisement of Black Americans. During the performance he paid tribute to Black Panther Party members killed by law enforcement, name-checking Bobby Hutton, George Jackson and Larry Kimmons while playing "Go! Go! Gorilla".

Staples also discussed the making of the video for his lead single "Blackberry Marmalade", recalling that a friend had been nervous about a scene showing a group of Black people in a restaurant, fearing backlash. Staples said he predicted a stronger reaction to a later scene in which the American flag was reimagined, suggesting audiences would find that more provocative than the restaurant scene.
