Volkswagen has announced that it will replace the recently discontinued ID.4 crossover with the upcoming ID.Tiguan, marking a strategic shift to leverage more recognisable brand names in the electric vehicle market. The German automaker believes that established nameplates like Tiguan will resonate better with consumers, particularly in the EV segment. The ID.Tiguan will debut in Europe in early 2027, joining the ID.Polo and ID.Cross in VW's revamped electric lineup, with a US launch planned for a later date.

The ID.4, introduced in 2020 as VW's mass-market EV competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V rather than the Tesla Model Y, sold 950,000 units since 2021 and is regarded as one of the company's most successful battery-electric models. Production of the ID.4 ended at VW's Chattanooga factory in April 2026. The ID.Tiguan will retain the ID.4's successful aspects whilst addressing its shortcomings, notably the lack of physical controls, by incorporating the interior design from the ID.3 NEO and ID.Polo—which proved surprisingly popular in the EU—with buttons for all four windows and dedicated physical controls for volume and climate settings.
