Volvo has revealed a plug-in hybrid refresh for its bestselling XC60 SUV and larger three-row XC90, headlined by a substantially larger battery that more than doubles real-world electric range. The update matters because the XC60 alone has sold over 2.7 million units worldwide, making it a crucial model for the brand, and the improved range addresses a longstanding criticism of plug-in hybrids offering only token electric-only driving. Both models also gain a new Gemini-powered infotainment system, following a similar update recently applied to the smaller XC40.

The XC60 T8's battery grows from 14.9 kWh to 37.9 kWh net capacity, lifting EV range from 35 miles to 78 miles on the EPA cycle, while the XC90 T8 gets the same pack for a 73-mile electric range. Styling tweaks include revised "Thor's Hammer" headlights with hidden matrix LED projectors, a slimmer grille and a new ventilated leather interior option. Notably, the XC60 will begin production at Volvo's South Carolina plant alongside its Swedish line, a move linked to current US tariff pressures favouring local manufacturing.
