Wafcon 2026 review: Glory for Cameroon, Nigeria flop and Malawi cause a stir

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Cameroon won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) for the first time, beating debutants Malawi 3-0 in the final in Rabat. The victory made Cameroon only the fourth nation to win the title, after Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa, and marked a striking changing of the guard, since former champions Nigeria and South Africa were both eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

Cameroon only entered this edition after the tournament was expanded to 16 teams and had not reached a final in a decade, yet went on to beat Nigeria, hosts Morocco and finally Malawi under new coach Valentine Nguele, who became the fifth woman to win Wafcon. Malawi, ranked 153rd and the lowest-ranked team at the tournament, defied expectations to reach the final and secured a first-ever World Cup berth, joining Cameroon, Morocco and Algeria in Brazil next year. Nigeria's shock exit led to the sacking of coach Justine Madugu and his staff after a play-off defeat to South Africa cost them their World Cup place, while hosts Morocco struggled badly from the penalty spot in both the semi-final and third-place play-off.

  • Cameroon beat Malawi 3-0 to win their first Wafcon title.
