Wales great Jones returns to Ospreys as a director

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Former Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones has been appointed a director on the Ospreys' board with immediate effect, returning to the Swansea region where he began his professional career. The move comes at a critical time for the club, which is fighting for survival amid Welsh Rugby Union plans to reduce the number of professional men's sides in Wales from four to three, a proposal the Ospreys have publicly opposed in favour of retaining a four-team structure.

Jones, 40, made his Ospreys debut in 2005 after coming through Swansea RFC, going on to win three league titles and an Anglo-Welsh Cup with the region before later playing for Toulon. He retired in 2023 having earned 158 Wales caps and 12 for the British and Irish Lions. Chairman James Davies-Yandle said the club sought a director who understands the organisation "from the inside," while Jones cited his knowledge of the game, the city and the region's plans, including the redevelopment of St Helen's, where the Ospreys will play their 2026-27 home fixtures, starting against the Dragons on 24 October.
