Australians travelling to Indonesia face flight delays and cancellations after Mount Anak Krakatau erupted over the weekend, sending a volcanic ash cloud across the region. The eruption, which produced fountains of lava and booming sounds audible up to 700km away, prompted the temporary closure of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and disrupted hundreds of domestic and international flights, affecting travellers on routes between Australia and Indonesia as well as other international connections.

The volcano first erupted on Saturday, with two further eruptions recorded on Sunday. By Sunday evening, ash had disrupted 467 flight movements at Soekarno-Hatta airport alone, affecting roughly 150,000 passengers, and the airport was ordered closed until at least 1am. At least a dozen flights linking Sydney, Perth and Melbourne with Jakarta were affected, alongside disruption to services to Doha, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, while 16 domestic flights to Bali were cancelled. Australia's Smartraveller service urged travellers to monitor flight status and warned that ash could affect air quality, while Indonesian authorities said safety remained the top priority and cautioned that disruption could cascade across aircraft rotations and terminal capacity in the coming days.
