## Key points

- Kerr prompted reporters to discuss the midterms after practice.
- He joked about having spent a supposed $5,000 payment.
- The article argues he handles political scrutiny inconsistently.

## Summary

Warriors coach Steve Kerr reopened a political discussion after practice on Wednesday, asking reporters why they had not asked about the US midterm elections. He joked that he had already spent a promised $5,000 payment, mocking a claim about payments linked to President Donald Trump; the article gives no evidence that such a payment was actually promised.

The article criticises Kerr for speaking publicly about politics while, in its view, avoiding scrutiny when challenged. It cites his support for Kamala Harris, his past comments on Hong Kong and Trump, and a January exchange in which Kerr apologised for misstating ICE enforcement activity before returning the discussion to basketball. The claims about Kerr’s motives and political double standards are the author’s judgements.
