The article argues that much of 2000s indie guitar rock borrowed heavily from Gang of Four, whose jagged riffs, danceable rhythms and angular style helped define the era. Bands including The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Futureheads and Arctic Monkeys drew on the group’s sound, sometimes appearing closer to imitation than simple inspiration.

Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen said the newer bands copied the music but largely avoided the band’s politically charged lyrics and willingness to challenge social conventions. The revival emerged amid the post-9/11 and Iraq War climate, when many artists favoured themes of romance, drugs and existential uncertainty; meanwhile, Gang of Four benefited from renewed attention, with Andy Gill producing The Futureheads and the original line-up touring and recording again.
