## Summary

Democrat James Talarico won Texas’s US Senate election on Tuesday, defeating Republican Ken Paxton. His victory is a major shift in a state long dominated by Republicans and the first time a Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994.

Talarico, a state representative and seminary student, campaigned on reducing everyday costs and revisiting corruption allegations involving Paxton, Texas’s attorney general. Paxton had President Donald Trump’s endorsement and argued that Talarico’s progressive social views did not reflect Texas; the Associated Press called the race at 11:03 p.m. EST.
