Guatemala's Fuego volcano displayed intensified seismic activity on Monday, prompting authorities to declare an orange-level alert—the second-highest emergency classification. Approximately 400 people living in surrounding communities were relocated to temporary facilities in nearby towns, whilst schools within the danger zone were closed to shield students from volcanic ash and debris.

The volcano stands just 16 kilometres from Antigua, a UNESCO-listed colonial city that draws significant tourism. Fuego's destructive potential was starkly demonstrated in 2018, when an eruption killed hundreds of residents. Despite this history, the mountain has also become an increasingly popular destination for hikers and adventure tourists, creating an ongoing challenge between economic activity and public safety in the region.
