## Key points

- Trump spoke at the reopened Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the eve of the midterms.
- Much of his speech focused on the pool and other Washington projects.
- He urged support for Republicans as control of Congress hung in the balance.

## Summary

President Donald Trump delivered his final public pitch before the US midterm elections on 2 November at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington. He announced the reopening of the pool after months of repairs and spent much of his speech discussing the work and other plans for the capital. He also praised his administration’s record on immigration and foreign policy, criticised Democratic candidates and urged voters to back Republicans in the 3 November elections, which will determine control of Congress.

The setting drew attention because the pool’s renovation had faced delays and problems, including damage to a new coating that prosecutors later acknowledged was caused by faulty installation. Trump presented the reopened landmark as an example of his administration’s work and repeated a proposal to send $5,000 payments to adults if Republicans retained control of Congress. His choice to close the campaign in Washington followed weeks of rallies around the country and put his capital projects at the centre of his last major speech before polling day.
