Deadline has released the first trailer for "One in a Million," an Oscar-contending documentary that follows Syrian girl Israa from age 11 to 21 as she flees war-torn Aleppo and eventually settles in Germany. The film, from co-directors Itab Azzam and Jack Macinnes, won two awards at Sundance, including the directing prize, and is notable for its decade-long, intimate portrait of a refugee family's resilience amid displacement following Syria's civil war.

The documentary charts a perilous journey that includes crossing the Mediterranean by inflatable raft and travelling on foot through Eastern Europe, with Greece's island of Samos serving as a key waypoint, before the family reaches Germany as one of a million Syrian refugees admitted there. Azzam, who is Syrian herself, and her partner Macinnes met Israa in Turkey in 2015 shortly after she and her family had escaped Aleppo, and decided to document her life over the following years; the film also touches on the dilemma facing Israa after the fall of the Assad regime over whether to return to Syria. It is produced by Frontline Features, PBS Distribution and BBC Storyville, with Oscar winner Raney Aronson-Rath among the producers, and is due for theatrical release in October.
