## Key points

- Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia.
- Republican groups cut spending on Mike Collins in October.
- The result matters to Democrats’ hopes of a Senate majority.

## Summary

Jon Ossoff won re-election to the US Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican Mike Collins and thwarting a Republican effort to gain a Senate seat. The result is a turnabout from Republicans’ optimism after Donald Trump narrowly carried Georgia in 2024, and it supports Democrats’ hopes of winning a Senate majority.

Ossoff led Collins in fundraising throughout the campaign, while Republican groups backing Collins pulled back their spending in mid-October, suggesting they expected to lose. Democrats’ path to a majority depends in part on holding seats in Georgia, Michigan and New Hampshire. The article also includes video of Collins speaking after the result.
