## Key points

- Weingarten gave animated anti-Trump speech at AFT conference
- She joked Trump drives her to drink vodka
- Fox News hosts accused the union of politicising education

## Summary

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, delivered an animated anti-Trump speech at the union's conference in Washington, at one point joking that the president drives her to drink vodka. The remarks drew criticism from Fox News commentators, who accused the union of politicising education rather than focusing on classroom issues.

Weingarten, a long-standing critic of President Trump and senior Republicans, reportedly mocked the White House's Independence Day "cage match" event during her keynote and made repeated animated gestures while addressing delegates. Fox & Friends Weekend hosts and commentator Kayleigh McEnany criticised the AFT for what they characterised as injecting partisan politics into a teachers' union gathering.
