Colombia is backing Donald Trump’s proposed “Shield of the Americas” security alliance, which aims to coordinate regional action against drug-trafficking and armed groups labelled “narco terrorists”. However, Vice President José Manuel Restrepo said Colombian forces—not US troops—would conduct operations inside Colombia, while American support would focus on intelligence, technology and security assistance. The development reflects both closer US-Colombian cooperation and a broader rightward political shift in Latin America.

Restrepo said the alliance could help protect democracy and take advantage of growing support for free markets and tougher security policies. The US has discussed possible joint action against groups including the National Liberation Army and FARC remnants, but Colombia’s position appears to limit direct American involvement. Violence has recently intensified, including an armed strike in Santa Marta by a drug-trafficking group, prompting the deployment of more than 500 soldiers and 600 police officers.
