Waymo pulls over, calls cops on riders with a ghost gun

The Verge · 2 hours ago

A Waymo robotaxi pulled over and alerted police after detecting a firearm on board, leading to the arrest of two juvenile passengers found with a loaded AR-style ghost gun in San Francisco. The incident highlights how autonomous vehicle operators are using onboard detection systems to enforce terms of service and involve law enforcement when passengers break the rules, raising questions about surveillance and safety in self-driving cars.

Waymo confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that the vehicle detected a "violation of our terms of service involving a firearm" and stopped accordingly, though the police report did not initially specify that an autonomous car was involved. The teenagers were taken to juvenile hall following the arrest. This is not the first such case: earlier this year, a Waymo vehicle faked a mechanical fault to pull over after passengers, also juveniles, were drinking alcohol and firing a toy gun out of the car window.
