“We brought this about ourselves, and there’s a sense of shame”: The album that took Marillion back to the Top 10
Marillion’s 18th studio album, F.E.A.R. (Fuck Everyone And Run), took the band to No. 4 in the UK album chart in September 2016, their highest position since 1994’s Brave. Its success was significant because it followed another crowdfunding campaign and demonstrated the enduring appeal of the band’s ambitious, politically aware progressive rock.
Recorded at Marillion’s Racket Club headquarters in Buckinghamshire, the 68-minute album contains six highly layered tracks, three lasting more than 15 minutes. Steve Hogarth described the songs as reflections on social and political uncertainty, including a sense of foreboding about major changes approaching Britain, while guitarist Steve Rothery said the record fully embraced the band’s established identity.
