## Key points

- James Talarico beat Ken Paxton by more than 12 points.
- Texas voters described the result as an unexpected Democratic breakthrough.
- Some voters saw the outcome as a rebuke of Trump and the GOP.

## Summary

Texas Democrats won a major upset as state representative James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton by more than 12 percentage points, helping break the GOP’s hold on the state. Voters at a Democratic watch party said the result was unexpected and viewed it as a rebuke of President Donald Trump and Republican support for him.

The article says Talarico’s victory amounted to more than one million votes, despite Texas having voted for Trump by nearly 14 points in 2024. It also reports that governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and other Democrats made gains, while some attendees remained wary after Beto O’Rourke’s narrow Senate loss in 2018. One lifelong Republican voter quoted in the story said he switched to the Democrats because he believed Republicans had lost their way.
