‘We never apologised for our rage or revenge-seeking’: riot grrrl legends Heavens to Betsy reunite

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Heavens to Betsy, the pioneering feminist punk duo of Corin Tucker and Tracy Sawyer, have reunited for the first time in 32 years, playing a secret DIY show in Portland, Oregon, this June. Alongside Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, the band helped define the early-1990s riot grrrl movement, channelling raw teenage fury into songs about body image, abuse, abortion and defiance of gendered expectations, a vernacular that continues to influence artists such as Olivia Rodrigo today.

The band, active from 1991 to 1994, released one album, Calculated, before Tucker went on to form Sleater-Kinney. Their reunion coincides with a US tour and the release of Baby's Gone, a new LP compiling a rare 1992 demo tape—originally recorded on a borrowed four-track and circulated on around 100 cassettes—alongside two 7in EPs. The show came 35 years after their debut performance at Olympia's International Pop Underground Convention, and drew a young crowd who knew every word, echoing the enduring reach of riot grrrl's DIY ethos.

  • Feminist punk duo Heavens to Betsy reunite after 32 years apart.
  • New tour and archival LP, Baby's Gone, are on the way.
  • Their riot grrrl legacy still influences artists like Olivia Rodrigo.
