## Key points

- A couple drowned after their inflatable kayak capsized.
- Neither was wearing a life jacket.
- Higher river flows prompted safety warnings.

## Summary

Cindy Bowers, 68, and her husband, Anthony Beringer, 59, drowned after their inflatable kayak capsized on Arizona’s Salt River on Saturday. The deaths have prompted warnings about river conditions as water levels were higher than usual following heavy rainfall.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of a man calling for help at about 1.30pm. Bowers was recovered by helicopter at 2.11pm, and search crews found Beringer at around 3pm; neither was wearing a life jacket. The sheriff’s office said additional releases from nearby dams had increased flows and created dangerous currents, while a flood warning remained in effect through 7 November.
