Wes Anderson Was Stuck in the Academy Museum Elevator With James L. Brooks and Luke Wilson

Variety · 2 months ago

Director Wes Anderson, actor Luke Wilson and producer James L. Brooks found themselves trapped in a lift at the Academy Museum for around half an hour, shortly after appearing on stage for a Q&A following a screening of "Bottle Rocket". The mishap, captured in an Instagram video by production specialist Carolyn Dunn, required the Los Angeles Fire Department to free the trio and several others caught in the malfunctioning lift. In the footage, Anderson asks the fire crew for their theory on the fault, to which a firefighter replies that it "probably had too much weight in it".

The incident followed a 30th anniversary screening and Q&A of Anderson's 1996 debut feature on Monday evening, described by a Variety contributor as a "rare L.A. appearance". "Bottle Rocket", which also starred Owen Wilson, Ned Dowd and Shea Fowler, earned Anderson a best new filmmaker prize at the MTV Movie Awards. The lift in question appeared to be one exiting to the museum's outdoor courtyard near valet parking, rather than those used by attendees inside. Separately, the Hollywood Bowl is set to host three nights of "Music from the Films of Wes Anderson", hosted by Bill Murray with performers including Mark Mothersbaugh, Beck, Jenny Lewis, Jackson Browne and Jason Schwartzman.
