## Key points

- The Savoy in Swindon will close on 8 November.
- It was sold to an undisclosed buyer.
- Locals say the pub is a valued meeting place.

## Summary

Wetherspoons will close The Savoy, its pub on Regent Street in Swindon town centre, on Sunday 8 November after selling it to an undisclosed buyer. The decision has upset local customers, who see the former cinema as a historic venue and an important meeting place for the town.

The pub was put up for sale in spring and advertised on Rightmove in May. After it closes, two other Wetherspoons pubs will remain within reach: the Sir Daniel Arms, an eight-minute walk away, and the Dockle Farmhouse, about two miles from the town centre. The article also mentions a separate dispute at a Wetherspoons in Gosport over a veteran wearing a poppy; the chain says it supports the Royal British Legion appeal and raised £55,867 for it last year.
