Whaley earns Walker Cup spot after US Amateur win
Jack Whaley has been named in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad, just two days after winning the US Amateur Championship. The 22-year-old from Rotherham beat American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 in the final at Merion, Pennsylvania, becoming only the third Englishman since 1911 to win the title, and is one of four players earning a first Walker Cup call-up.
Dean Robertson will captain the 10-man GB&I team for a third time at Lahinch in County Clare on 5–6 September, as the side bids to reclaim the trophy for the first time since 2015. Alongside Whaley, new inclusions Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook and Josh Hill join returning player Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup golfer Ian Poulter, while the United States hold a commanding 40-9 lead in the series (with one match halved) after their 17-9 win at Cypress Point in 2025.
