What is Trump Media’s Truth API and why is it controversial?

BBC World · 3 hours ago

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) has launched Truth API, a paid data feed offering Wall Street firms and institutional investors near-instant access to posts from Truth Social's most influential accounts, including potentially President Trump's own. The move matters because Trump's statements can move markets, and critics have raised legal and ethical concerns about a company majority-owned by the president's family potentially profiting from his public statements as head of state.

The service, which began rolling out to institutional customers from 1 August, delivers posts in "milliseconds" and is reportedly priced at up to $100,000 a month, according to the Financial Times, though TMTG has not confirmed this figure. It is aimed primarily at high-frequency and algorithmic trading firms that rely on automated systems to trade at extreme speed. TMTG, which is currently loss-making, says the service will provide a steady new revenue stream, though it has not disclosed how many customers have signed up, and major banks and trading firms contacted by the BBC, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citadel Securities and Jane Street, declined to comment or did not respond.
