## Key points

- McNamara replaces Cullen as Leinster head coach next year.
- He helped Bordeaux win back-to-back European titles.
- Leinster lost 41-19 to Bordeaux in May’s final.

## Summary

Noel McNamara will take over as Leinster head coach next year, replacing Leo Cullen after five years away from the province. His appointment follows a successful spell as Bordeaux Begles’ attack coach, where he helped the French club beat Leinster in May’s Champions Cup final and secure back-to-back European titles.

Ireland players have welcomed the move, describing McNamara as an exciting appointment with a fresh perspective and strong rugby knowledge. The 43-year-old previously worked at Leinster as academy manager and Leinster A coach, and led Ireland Under-20s to a Grand Slam in 2019 before coaching the Sharks in South Africa. Cullen leaves after 12 years, six league titles and the 2018 Champions Cup, though Leinster have since lost five finals in that competition.
