## Key points

- Omar faces two federal probes, but allegations remain unproven.
- Denaturalisation would require a separate civil proceeding.
- Minnesota has 20,000 to 30,000 unscheduled removal cases.

## Summary

Former federal immigration judge Nathan Hansen said Representative Ilhan Omar could face criminal charges and, in a separate process, possible denaturalisation if investigators establish immigration fraud. The comments come as two federal probes examine allegations about her citizenship paperwork and a reported discrepancy in her financial disclosures; the investigations have not established wrongdoing.

Hansen said a criminal conviction would not automatically end Omar’s citizenship, and that any denaturalisation case would be a separate civil action brought at the Justice Department’s discretion. Federal agents reportedly seized her phone, passport and computer during a search of her Washington home on 12 October, and authorities are said to hold her DNA. Hansen also argued that concealment can affect how limitation periods apply, and cited a backlog of 20,000 to 30,000 Minnesota removal cases without scheduled court dates.
