Apple's MagSafe and the newer Qi2 standard used by Android phones are technically the same magnetic wireless-charging system, differing mainly in branding and licensing rather than function. MagSafe began as Apple's magnetic ring around the iPhone 12's charging coil, solving the alignment problems that made older Qi charging slow and inefficient; the idea proved so popular that Apple donated it to the Wireless Power Consortium in 2023 to form the basis of the open Qi2 standard now used by rivals such as Google and Samsung.

Because Qi2 is built on the same underlying technology, accessories are largely interchangeable: Qi2 phones and cases can snap onto MagSafe-branded stands and power banks, and vice versa, unless physical dimensions clash (such as camera bump placement). MagSafe helped push the iPhone 12's wireless charging speed from 7.5W to 15W, and both MagSafe and Qi2 have since raised their top speeds further. Few Android phones have built-in Qi2 so far, with the Google Pixel 10's PixelSnap system a notable exception, while Samsung instead offers Qi2 magnets via add-on cases for devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
