Sam Neill recalled that he and fellow Jurassic Park cast members narrowly avoided danger when Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai during filming in 1992. The Category Four storm destroyed sets and severely damaged the island, underlining the real-life risks faced by a production best known for its fictional dinosaurs.

Neill said he was on the beach with Laura Dern as the storm approached before cast and crew were moved into a ballroom at their hotel. Iniki killed six people, destroyed more than 14,000 homes and caused over $3 billion (£2.4 billion) in damage; some hurricane footage was later used in the film. The production also faced a separate near-miss when the animatronic Tyrannosaurus malfunctioned and almost crushed its operator.
