White House Has Spent More Than $440,000 on Pro-Trump TV Ads Paid for by U.S. Government; Administration Defends ‘Unapologetically American’ Spots and Denies They’re Campaign Ads
Developing story first seen 3 hours ago
The Trump administration has launched government-funded television advertisements featuring President Trump promoting policy achievements and warning against communism, spending at least $443,000 on the initial spot since it began airing Wednesday on Fox News and Newsmax. The ads, airing just weeks before November's midterm elections, have drawn criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers who argue they resemble campaign advertising rather than legitimate public service announcements. A second 60-second advertisement was launched Friday, and additional controversy emerged when musician JMSN accused the administration of using his song without authorisation.
The White House has defended the spots as patriotic public service announcements, citing precedents from previous administrations of both parties—including the Biden administration's "We Can Do This" campaign and Obama-era Obamacare advertisements. Critics, including Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin, contend the ads violate the Hatch Act, which prohibits certain political activities by federal employees, with Raskin characterising it as potential "felony criminal theft of government property." Republican Senator Thom Tillis called the use of taxpayer funds "inappropriate" and compared it to practices in Hungary, whilst the musician whose track appears in the main advertisement publicly stated he never granted permission for its use.
