## Summary

Jason Turkish, the fiancé of Michigan Democratic congresswoman Haley Stevens, became a prominent figure in the state’s US Senate race after saying he would vote for Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Turkish, a Jewish Democrat and disability rights lawyer, accused El-Sayed of using language that made Jewish voters feel less safe. He also criticised an advert by an independent group supporting El-Sayed that linked US aid to Israel with rising prices. El-Sayed said the advert was unaffiliated with his campaign and that he disagreed with its contents. Turkish leads Nyman Turkish PC, a law firm focused on disability claims and accessibility, and serves on Michigan’s Attorney Discipline Board.

Stevens initially reaffirmed her support for El-Sayed, who had narrowly beaten her in the Democratic primary. On 1 November, two days before the election, she reversed course and endorsed Rogers after a planned joint appearance with El-Sayed fell through. She and Turkish attended a Detroit church service with Rogers. The move drew sharp criticism from Democratic leaders and exposed divisions over Israel, antisemitism and party unity in a closely watched contest for the seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters. Stevens has said her decision was her own, rejecting suggestions that Turkish made it for her.
