Maine state Representative Valli Geiger, a Rockland Democrat, has drawn sudden national attention after saying that embattled Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner encouraged her to consider taking his place on the ballot in the Maine Senate race should he withdraw. The development matters because Platner's candidacy is engulfed in scandal, including a rape allegation he denies, and his potential exit has triggered a scramble over who might replace him.

Geiger told local outlet WMTW that Platner rang her on Monday night, praised her as a "fighter" and asked whether he could put her name forward; his campaign confirmed he had encouraged her to consider running but said no endorsement decision had been made. Geiger said she would not "throw Graham under the bus", while also declining to accuse his accuser, Jenny Racicot, of anything beyond telling the truth as she experienced it. Geiger is a third-term legislator and former nurse who previously served six years on Rockland City Council, including a year as mayor. Notably, Platner has not formally dropped out and Geiger has not been named as a replacement.
