Why Is Everyone So Mad About Benny Blanco’s Latin Album?

Rolling Stone · 3 hours ago

Benny Blanco’s Latin-focused album Hermoso has prompted online debate, with some critics accusing the American producer of cultural appropriation and questioning its cover artwork, which shows him in a caricature-style mask. The controversy matters because it has emerged amid heightened concern over US immigration enforcement and the treatment of Latino communities, leading some commentators to argue that Blanco should address those issues if drawing heavily on Latin music and imagery.

Hermoso follows Blanco and Selena Gomez’s 2025 joint album and features Gomez alongside artists including Becky G, Myke Towers, Mora, Netón Vega, BB Trickz and the Marías, blending música mexicana, cumbia and reggaeton with pop. Blanco, born Benjamin Levin in Virginia and of Ashkenazi Jewish background, has said he chose the name “Benny Blanco” early in his rap career and has never claimed to be Latino. He has described growing up around Latin music and has criticised mass deportations targeting Latino people.

  • Benny Blanco’s Latin album has sparked cultural-appropriation accusations.
  • Critics also object to the album’s caricature-style cover.
  • Blanco says Latin music influenced him growing up.
