Heated Rivalry and other favourites blocked by Emmy eligibility rules
Ahead of the 2026 Primetime Emmy nominations, announced at 8:30 a.m. PT on Wednesday, Deadline explains why several popular and acclaimed shows will not feature this year. The reasons come down to Academy eligibility rules rather than quality, so fans should not be surprised to find favourites missing from the list.
The biggest talking point is Heated Rivalry, ruled out because it was fully funded and produced by Canada's Crave (Bell Media) with no intrinsically involved U.S. production partner, despite airing on HBO Max. Others, including Every Year After, Elle, Cape Fear, House of the Dragon and The Vampire Lestat, aired outside the window that closed on 31 May, missing the requirement to air at least six episodes (or all episodes for limited series) before the cutoff. Shows such as Dutton Ranch and Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed fell short on episode counts, while "hanging episodes" that aired after the deadline — as with Widow's Bay and Top Chef — cannot be considered, chiefly affecting craft categories. The Bear again aired its newest season too late, Office Romance premiered just after the window, and shows like Andor and Squid Game have simply ended.
- Missing Emmy favourites are down to eligibility rules, not quality.
- Heated Rivalry is out for lacking a U.S. production partner.
- The eligibility window closed on 31 May 2026.
