## Key points

- Nelson says documentary contributors chose not to report allegations to police.
- The documentary helped prompt the Met investigation.
- Police inquiries remain ongoing after Brand’s conviction.

## Summary

Detective Inspector Laura Nelson has explained why the women who spoke anonymously in a 2023 Channel 4 documentary and Times investigation did not take part in Russell Brand’s rape trial: they had not chosen to report their allegations to police. Nelson said officers contacted the documentary’s production company to outline reporting options and support services, while respecting the women’s decisions.

The documentary prompted the Metropolitan Police investigation and encouraged other women to come forward. One allegation concerned an incident in the United States, raising jurisdiction issues; the jury was instructed to disregard the documentary allegations when reaching its verdicts. Nelson said the investigation remains ongoing and hopes Brand’s conviction will give others confidence to report.
