Forced PC shutdowns can corrupt files and disrupt critical updates
Holding down a PC’s power button should generally be avoided because it cuts power without allowing the operating system and applications to complete shutdown procedures. This can cause corrupted files, lost data and, particularly during updates, potentially leave the computer unable to start.
Programs may be indexing files, syncing data, autosaving or installing updates in the background when power is interrupted. Windows 11 lets users customise the power button to shut down, sleep, hibernate, turn off the display or do nothing through Settings > Power options, reducing the need for forced shutdowns.
