Parents-in-law charged with killing New York Times games executive

A New York Times executive has been killed in a shooting allegedly carried out by his parents-in-law during a contentious divorce and custody battle. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the director of engineering for the NYT's games department, was shot dead in Dublin, California in a car park on Saturday afternoon by his estranged wife's parents, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, according to police. The brazen daylight attack highlights a tragic escalation of the couple's bitter separation, which had already involved restraining orders filed by both sides.

The shooting occurred in the car park of a Dublin Sports Grounds store, where a police sergeant who happened to be nearby found McKinsey on the ground as witnesses called emergency services. Zhang and Chen were arrested within minutes after being identified by witnesses in a nearby vehicle. Both face murder charges and eleven additional criminal counts, including a "lying in wait" charge that presumes premeditation and carries a life sentence with no possibility of parole. McKinsey, who transitioned from female to male in 2010, was married to Candice Jang, 46, with whom he shares three young children aged 7, 5 and 3. The couple had been living separately whilst navigating a bitter custody dispute; court records show McKinsey had pleaded not guilty to two counts of misdemeanour child abuse filed against him the previous year.
