- The songs blend folk traditions with rock, dance rhythms and dark comedy.

## Summary

Willi Carlisle’s double album, *The Universal Bubba*, celebrates the complexity and variety of everyday life in the Ozarks, Appalachia and the American South. The review argues that Carlisle’s songs challenge stereotypes about rural communities, finding humour, tenderness and shared humanity in people’s work, family ties and struggles.

Produced by Tyler Childers and recorded in New Orleans with members of his band, the Food Stamps, the album blends folk and country with Southern rock and other styles. Banjo and fiddle feature, but Carlisle ranges beyond tradition across songs including “Marlboro Vinyasa”, “Master’s Hammer” and the end-of-life prayer “Golden Dragon Buffet”, which pairs an absurd image with reflections on mortality.
