## Key points

- Sonny suspects his mother has been replaced.
- Connie Britton plays both versions of Ellen.
- Nick Paley blends a dark premise with comedy.

## Summary

In *Phony*, teenager Sonny wakes from a coma convinced his mother, Ellen, has been replaced by an impostor, played by the same actor, Connie Britton. Creator Nick Paley turns the disturbing mystery into a comedy, using the unsettling premise to explore how Sonny interprets his mother’s changed behaviour.

The first two episodes arrived on Hulu on 20 October. Paley says the idea grew from childhood fears about losing his mother, his discovery that his aunt was her non-identical twin, and research into Capgras syndrome, a rare delusion that a loved one is an impostor. Sam Nivola plays Sonny, and Paley describes the story as Sonny’s own reliable perspective; the series is not a limited series, though a second season is not guaranteed.
