Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey topped the box office in its opening weekend, taking $123.5 million in the US and Canada and $263.8 million worldwide. Its composer, Ludwig Göransson, is now being discussed as a strong contender for another Academy Award for best original score, having already won the category three times this century, most recently for Sinners earlier in 2026. A win or nomination would extend an unusually strong run of consecutive blockbuster scores and could set several historic records for the composer.

Should Göransson's score for The Odyssey win at the 99th Oscars on 14 March, he would become the first composer in two decades to win back-to-back scoring Oscars, and the first in more than three decades to win three scoring Oscars within four years and four within nine years, following his wins for Black Panther (2019), Oppenheimer (2024) and Sinners (2026). At 42, he would also be the youngest composer in over six decades to reach four scoring Oscars. The Odyssey is the third consecutive Nolan film Göransson has scored, following Tenet and Oppenheimer, while Oscar nominations for the 99th Academy Awards are due on 21 January.
